420 kilo equipment, hundreds hours of rehearsals and preparations, 3600 kilometres of distance, tens hours of journey. The realization of the first in the history jazz concert inside the volcano met with success. On the spot the Maciej Fortuna band performed a programme inspired by Polish folk songs.
The way to the Thrihnukagigur volcano can be covered only on foot because of the Bláfjöll National Park surrounding it. With audience help musicians transported equipment weighing almost half of a tone. They carried it for the distance close to 4 kilometres.
We went down into the crater in two groups, in the first place the technical staff with drums, double bass, recording equipment, electrical wiring, stands, cameras, and then the audience. The stay, including the recording equipment installation, took 90 minutes – it was our maximum. Before the departure we had calculated the approximate time of unfolding and playing that we could have, in order not to cool off completely.
One of the most unique effects is the aura of the place where I play my music. It's for me the main inspiration. We played the concert on the bottom of deep, over 120 metres, igneous chamber of active volcano, the only one place on Earth where the hardening lava has created the cave with fabulous acoustic conditions. Quite big fear for us was vision of working in the temperature close to 0 degree. We'd been prepared to these conditions, but finally we were not able to predict how the instruments would react, and especially voice.
Concert into the volcano is a premiere of the new band repertoire that since January 2017 is going on a tour.
